QReview!
Of Darkness, Light, and Fire
Author: Tanya Huff
Section: Fiction
Genre: Realistic fantasy, straight,
gay/ Fantasy, straight, gay, bisexual
Rating: 9.5/ 7
Plot Rundown: Actually two novels in
one, this book details two tales. In the
first, a battle between the Light and the
Darkness threatens to let Darkness completely
destroy the human world. All that stands in
its way is a mentally handicapped girl, her
overworked social worker, and a street
musician who might one day be a Bard. In the
second, the magical Stone that protects the
city of Ischia from the might of the nearby
volcano has been stolen, and it falls to a
terminally depressed thief, a drunkard of a
prince, and a teenaged wizard princess to
steal it back.
Review: Tanya Huff's characters never
fail to impress. The cast of the first story
(Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light) deals
with characters rarely seen in casual
fiction: a mentally challenged heroine? A
hero who plays the guitar on a street corner?
An oracular bag lady? Merged with the
intense, often gruesome imagery and snappy,
energetic dialogue, this first story is a
wonderful read indeed. Although the plot of
the second story (The Fire's Stone) is a
little weak, it is saved by the humorous, yet
not comical, interaction of its characters.
The climax leaves much to be desired, but
your attachment to the characters will carry
you through to the end regardless.
