Hello, all!
Staff Drop-In Hours
You're queer, we're here. You're not queer,
we're still here. Tam and Deb have a Monday
through Friday open door policy--still, we
are sometimes away from the center during
meetings or trainings. (So it's always a good idea to
call before you drop by!)
We're posting office hours here so you can see the
times when we're especially available to you. We
also have other center volunteers who are
here for you; we'd like you to meet them!
Volunteer Fr. James' Drop In Hours:
Mon, 10am-12pm. James is an alumnus
(Cowell College 1971, English and American
Literature) who volunteers most
Monday mornings to help with the Center's
library. This is pretty familiar territory
for him, since he has donated many of the
books in it. From the early '70's to the early
'80's, he was very active in lesbian and gay
student groups in Davis and Sacramento and
in gay journalism, being the founding editor
of two newspapers in Sacramento. He is also
a priest, and would be happy to talk about
being queer and Christian (especially Catholic) with
anyone
who wants to drop in while he's at the Center. Or
leave a message for him (459.4385) if you'd like to
set up another time to talk.
Intern Livia Peras' Drop In Hours:
Wed, 1-3pm. Livia is a graduate student at SJSU in
Educational Counseling interning at the Cantú
Queer Center Fall quarter. She is available
to talk about anything from career goals to
adjusting to life at UCSC. She can also be
reached via email at: lperas@hotmail.com
Program Coordinator Tam Welch's Drop In
Hours: Thurs, 12-4pm. Tam coordinates almost
everything here at the
Cantú Queer Center. Please come and talk to
her about anything from coming out, to queer
people of color topics, to ideas for working
together. She is always busy but never too
busy for you! Tam's phone: 459.2468 Tam's
email:queer@ucsc.edu
Director Deb Abbott's Drop In Hours: Fri, 12-4pm, You can talk with Deb Abbott most anything.
She's a licensed psychotherapist and while
her job at the center is not to provide ongoing
counseling, she is available to listen and provide
support and referrals. Deb's phone: 459.4385 Deb's
email: dabbott@ucsc.edu.

QReview!
Descendants of Darkness, Volume Two
Author: Yoko Matsushita
Section: Manga (Japanese graphic
novels)
Genre: Fantasy fiction, drama, gay
Rating: 9.5
Plot Rundown: In the afterlife, the
Ministry of Hades judges the sins of the dead
and decides upon their destination: heaven,
hell, or reincarnation. Sometimes souls die
before their time, or do not die when their
time comes; the Summons Department exists to
sort out these mishaps. A boy who received a
cornea transplant begins playing the violin
as though possessed-and he is indeed being
possessed: by the demon Sagatanasu. Tsuzuki
and Hisoka are deployed to stop Sagatanasu,
but the demon has a devilish trick up his
nonexistent sleeve.
Review: Told through humorous dialogue
and breathtaking illustrations, this second
volume of Matsushita's Descendants of
Darkness series is as much of a must-read as
the first. Although the first volume need not
be read to enjoy this second, anyone who even
half-enjoyed the first will find this second
book a gripping read.
