 QReview!

Dancer from the Dance
Author: Andrew Holleran
Section: Fiction
Genre: Gay, transvestite
Rating: 8.5
Plot Rundown: Beginning as letters written back and forth between two jaded queens, this book details the story of Malone, an innocent, beautiful newcomer to the gay society of the '60s and '70s--his obsession with finding love, and his inability to see what he is even looking for.
Review: If you look at this book as historical fiction rather than pure fiction, you will find it a much more interesting read. The recounting of the crazed and dangerous parties of the 60s is fascinating, and Holleran's imagery is impeccable. However, the main selling point of this book is the truly insane character Sutherland, who parties eternally, talks lasciviously, pops any pill he sees, and hangs out of his window in a frilly blouse and ridiculous wig to scream Italian obscenities at passersby. Sutherland alone makes this novel worth reading.
