QReview!
Dream Boy
Author: Jim Grimsley
Section: Fiction
Genre: Realistic fiction, gay
Rating: 5
Plot Rundown: Reclusive Nathan, his
quietly religious mother, and his abusive
drunkard of a father have just moved to
Potter's Lake, a small town in the rural
South. Against his own will, Nathan becomes
smitten with Roy, a senior at his high school
who lives next door. A complicated dance of
courtship ensues between the two, but
suspicious schoolmates and Nathan's father
spell danger on the horizon.
Review: Grimsley has a wonderful,
haunting, evocative style of description that
relies upon subtle hints of imagery and
precise depiction of emotions. It is a
wonderful writing style to have, but
unfortunately it is lost upon this book. The
story is trite, the characters uninteresting, and
the ending not only depressing, but
unrelated to every problem
hitherto introduced in the book. The book is
worth skimming through simply for Grimsley's
entrancing writing style, but is worth very
little beyond that.
NOTE: Reviewers wanted!
