 QReview!

The Ballad of Reading Gaol
Author: Oscar Wilde
Section: Poetry
Genre: Poetry
Rating: 8.5

Plot Rundown Written during his imprisonment, the Ballad of Reading Gaol is a thoughtful and uncertain meditation on the law and the death penalty. The narrator addresses the role of crime in society and the motivators rather than the punishments. The poem encourages charity not anger towards the offender.

Review: Oscar Wilde commentates on the suffering of those condemned by the law. Told through narrative, Wilde sympathizes with a fellow inmate, imprisoned for the murder of his wife, and society's misunderstanding of both individuals. The emotion in this works seems genuine as Wilde highlights the public and humanity in a condition of internal struggle and torment. His view of the world is altered from behind iron bars. The stark beauty and innocence of the world without has become dearest to him. Wilde's work takes a great turn from his usually satire and creates an image and reflection on a people and a man he considers deeply disturbed. This poem is certainly worth taking a look at.
