 QReview!

Erotic Poems from the Greek Anthology
Translator: John Gill
Section: Poetry
Genre: Poetry, homosexuality
Rating: 7.0

Plot Rundown This selection of poetry was chosen from the Greek Anthology, a collection of short Greek poems from their rich literary history. In this volume 45 homoerotic poems were translated and modernized in order to convey the same Greek expressionism to a contemporary audience. Also included are as series of nude drawings paired with the individual poems.

Review: This collection was an interesting take on Greek homosexuality; however, the order of the poetry seemed disjointed. It was also painfully clear where the translator took liberties modernizing the text. Regardless of these minor qualms the poetry itself was quite frank and had an appealing vulgarity. What I found most striking was the universality many of the themes such as the appreciation of male beauty, the governance of lust, and fear of ageing, still have today. The apparent modernity of the poetry in this volume make it worth picking up and browsing through, the illustrations alone are reason enough to take a look.
