 QReview!

Gertrude and Alice
Author: Diana Souhami
Section: Biography
Genre: Biography, lesbian, Gertrude Stein
Rating: 9.0

Plot Rundown This exquisite biography chronicles the lives (one might go so far as to say "life") of the famous author Gertrude Stein (who once tried to give up nouns) and the love of her life, Alice B. Toklas (who possessed a legendary mustache).

Review: Although even this biography cannot entirely free itself of the boredom usually attributed to biographies, Souhami does a spectacular job making her recount of the famous dames crackle with anecdotes and energy. If more biographies were written like this, it would be an infinitely more popular form of writing.
