QReview!
Farthing
Author: Jo Walton
Section: Mystery
Genre: Mystery, gay, lesbian, bisexual
Rating: 10.0
Plot Rundown It is 1949, eight years
after England signed a peace treaty with
Hitler. Lucy Kahn ne Eversley, the daughter of
Lord and Lady Eversley of the outrageously
wealthy Farthing Set, is in horrific disgrace
for having married the Jewish David Kahn, as
Jews have been terribly discriminated against
ever since Hitler took power. However,
inexplicably, Lucy and David are invited to
an Eversley garden party one weekend...a party
where Lord Thirkie, who engineered the treaty
between England and Germany, is murdered. It
is immediately obvious that Lucy and David
were invited purely so that the murder could
be blamed on David. However, as events become
more and more twisted, can the murderer be
found before David is hung?
Review: Beginning as just a casual
murder mystery, the confusions and
complications of this book quickly hit the
breaking point and, scoffing at it, go above
and beyond it. This is no simple whodunit
mystery; this is a brilliant masterpiece of
alternative reality, devious politics, and
pervasive corruption that still remains
light, amusing, and utterly gripping.
Definitely a must-read.
