 QReview!
 Queer Japan

Translators and Editors: Barbara Summerhawk, Cheiron McMahill, Darren McDonald

Section: Nonfiction

Genre: Anthology, Autobiographical, Drama, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual

Rating: 9

Plot Rundown: A collection of brief autobiographies penned by ordinary gay, lesbian, and bisexual citizens of Japan.

Review: From the story of a woman who spent her marriage attempting to deny her love for another woman, to an interview with a male-to-female transsexual lesbian, to the tragedy of a deaf man who lost his first lover in a plane crash, this book is filled with some of the saddest, most poignant stories you can imagine. The almost-complete denial of homosexuality in Japan—until recently, there was no word for “lesbian” in the entire language—has been the source of an almost unbearable amount of desolation and heartbreak, and all of it spills forth in these pages. This book must truly be read to be believed.
