Apichatpong Weerasethakul at UCSC A visionary proponent of a new Thai cinema--with films that are variously mysterious, challenging, erotic, and sublimely beautiful, Weerasethakul has developed a language and style of filmmaking that has invigorated contemporary cinema. UC Santa Cruz is proud to present two remarkable films from early in the director's career and to welcome Apichatpong to Santa Cruz: Blissfully Yours (2002) 122min, color, 12.30pm, Studio C, Communications. The film follows the mundane yet sensual details of a warm afternoon in a Thai border town, where a young Burmese immigrant forms a relationship with two Thai women. Mysterious Object at Noon (2000) 85min, bw, 6pm, Oakes 105. With an introduction and discussion by the director. A deconstruction of traditional film narrative and an utterly compelling vision of the everyday life of poor communities in rural Thailand--a multilayered narrative that is part fiction, part documentary.  QReview!
 Come Out, Squirtle!

Author: Unknown

Section: Coming Out

Genre: Indescribable

Rating: 10

Plot Rundown: Why should Squirtle come out of his shell? It seems so much safer inside. But there is something incredible and stupendous outside, which Squirtle will not be able to see unless he finally comes out.

Review: Yes, it is a children’s book that has nothing whatsoever to do with GLBTI anything, but rarely has any book expressed coming out in such a sweet, poignant way. It is a two-minute read that will melt your heart like a chocolate chip cookie fresh out of the oven. Even people who do not identify as queer of any kind should read this book, and EVERYBODY who does absolutely must.

~Ian Sentelik
