 QReview!
 War of the Oaks

Author: Emma Bull

Section: Fiction

Genre: Fantasy, Straight

Rating: 8.0

Plot Rundown: The good and evil Courts of Faerie wish to do battle in Minneapolis-however, the only way for immortals to spill one another's blood is with the help of mortals. Enter Eddi McCandry, an aspiring rock star who's stuck at seedy nightclubs attempting to drag her music out of the gutter. Guarded by a magical phouka, Eddi must try to end the war before she is responsible for too much faerie bloodshed-or before the Queen of Air and Darkness decides to stop her herself.

Review: Almost everything about this book, from the prose to the characters to the portrayal of magic in our world, is wonderful. The one place it falls short is in the area of suspense-the revelations of the plot come without any fanfare, so blandly that you almost don't realize that you've just read the climax of the novel.
