QReview!
Boy Meets Boy
Author: David Levithan
Section: Fiction
Genre: Realistic Fiction, Gay, Lesbian
Rating: 8.5
Plot Rundown:At Paul's school, the
cheerleaders ride Harleys, the star
quarterback is also the homecoming queen, and
the goal of the gay-straight alliance is
teaching the straight kids how to dance. Of
course, his best friend is dumping their
friendship for her new boyfriend, his other
best friend is under house arrest thanks to
ultra-conservative parents, and his
ex-boyfriend is moving about as far away as a
cow covered in Superglue. But none of that
matters, because Paul has just met Noah, the
love of his life-until he makes a terrible
mistake that loses Noah's trust. Can Paul
redeem himself before he loses Noah for good?
Review: The most wonderful thing about
this book is the setting. Unlike the oceans
of books out there that obsessively describe
cultures where alternative sexualities are
either required or forbidden, Boy Meets
Boy actually treats sexuality as a
normal, everyday thing. Some people like it,
some people don't, but the majority just
accepts it as being as ordinary as breathing.
Apart from a setting we would all kill to
live in, the writing is light and humorous,
the characters are memorable without being
demented, and the ending is satisfactory if
perhaps not perfect. It won't solve any
questions about the meaning of life, but it's
a sweet, entertaining read for any weekend
where you just need to relax.
